Using Mindfulness-Based Interventions to Address Substance Use within Mood and Anxiety Disorders

This workshop will provide a theoretical foundation of mindfulness-based therapies and outline the goals of mindfulness-based interventions. It will help participants to better assess for substance use and to understand the function of the behavior in clients presenting with mood/anxiety disorders. Participants will explore and examine personal biases and other internal barriers that impede their ability to address substance use. Participants will build skills to apply mindfulness-based interventions to decrease problematic substance use that exacerbates mood/anxiety disorders. The following are the learning objectives for this workshop:
1) Explain the rationale for the use of mindfulness-based interventions with substance use.
2) Assess the function of substance use.
3) Explain and implement mindfulness-based interventions with clients.

Mindful Living: Understanding and Intervening Through the ACT Lens

This workshop is an intermediate level workshop intended for clinicians who are already familiar with the foundations of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It will focus on helping clinicians learn how to frame presenting problems through the lens of the core processes of ACT. It will also provide clinicians with an opportunity to learn how to utilize ACT-based interventions consistent with the 6-core processes, in order to enhance psychological flexibility.
The following are the learning objectives for this workshop:
1) Describe clients’ presenting problems through an ACT framework.
2) Identify which core process to intervene with based on client presentation.
3) Implement specific interventions to enhance psychological flexibility.

The Application of Mindful Self-Compassion in the Treatment of Depression

This workshop will provide a theoretical framework of the Mindful Self-Compassion model. It will address how lack of self-compassion relates to the maintenance of depressive symptoms. Participants will learn and practice mindful self-compassion techniques and gain an understanding of how to integrate this model into whichever theoretical orientation they utilize primarily to address depressive disorders.
The following are the learning objectives for this workshop:
1) Define mindful self-compassion.
2) Explain how a deficit in self-compassion perpetuates depressive symptoms.
3) Implement mindful self-compassion with themselves and clients.
